Atlas moth is a rare insect found on trees in spring and summer. The scientific name of atlas moth is "Attacus atlas". The name "Atlas" in this name refers to many meanings, like the map on its wings and the snake head figures on its wings. It is one of the largest lepidopterans (both butterflies and moths are collectively referred to as lepidopterans), with wingspan of 9.4 inches and wing surface area of about 25 inches ². Here females are larger and heavier than males.

The atlas moths have no mouth and they don't eat once they have emerged from the cocoon and they depend on storing fat for energy. Therefore they have a very short lifespan and can live up to one to two weeks. Their wings look like snake heads, which protect them from enemies. It's the largest moth in the world in terms of wing surface area. These are seen in South Asia, East Asia and Southeast Asia. In India, atlas moths are cultivated for their silk and in Taiwan the atlas moth's cocoons are used as purses.
