Bitter gourd, Bitter melon or Bitter apple is scientifically known as Momordica charantia. It is a tropical and subtropical vine and is seen mainly in Asia and Africa. And its origin place is India. It is cultivated for its fruit and leaf, as it is eatable but both its fruit and leaf have a very bitter taste. Therefore some people don't want to eat this vegetable but in fact it is very healthy and good for human body.

        According to the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture), 100 grams of bitter gourd provides very small amount of energy but it provides huge amount of vitamins and minerals, which makes it a healthy food. It is usually cooked in a green or early yellowing stage. According to Indians, it works as a medicine for patients with diabetes. And it is also used as herbal medicine in Africa.


Appearance :-


        The bitter gourd plant grows up to 5m or more than 5m. Its leaf has 3 to 7 separated lobes. Its flower is yellow in color and the plant has male and female flowers. The bitter gourd is completely green in color but in the old stage it looks yellow.

        The bitter gourds, which are found in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are appeared same but the Chinese bitter gourds are different. Because the outer surface of the Indian bitter gourd looks like triangular teeth, while the surface of the Chinese bitter gourd does not have such types. In India, two different variants of bitter gourd are found, one is long bitter gourd and the other is short bitter gourd, but both of them look alike and only have different sizes.
