Long pepper is also known as Indian long pepper, Pipli or Pippali and is scientifically known as Piper longum. Long pepper tastes hot like black pepper but differs slightly from it and the taste of its seed and other part is also hot. Its plant is a vine and has no flower. It has another species called as Piper retrofractum. The long pepper plant is native to India. Now, long pepper plants are rarely available in some African countries and are found in India, Nepal, Indonesia, Pakistan and Malaysia.

        It is cultivated for its fruits, which are usually dried and used as spices and seasoning; And it is also used in Ayurvedic treatment. In some Ayurvedic remedies, it is slightly burnt in a fire or fry and a powder is made and this powder is eaten with honey to prevent disease. In India, its powder is sometimes eaten with red tea (Kadha in Hindi) to prevent cold disease.

        In the first stage the long pepper looks slightly white, looks green in the middle stage or young stage, looks red in the old stage or when it ripens, and it looks black when ripe or young long pepper is dried. The long pepper seeds are very small and the taste of these seeds is hot like black pepper but slightly different.
